#9- Central & Monroe/San Carlos Hotel

The revitalization of downtown Phoenix brings more attention to the neighboring businesses located on Central & Monroe. This is also the location of the Hotel San Carlos, one of Phoenix's oldest and most notorious hotels. The rich and famous stayed there during the 50's & 60's. The hotel has a history for hauntings by those who have passed onsite. The hotel still is popular with toursists and hipsters looking to see and be seen at rooftop pool parties. Seamus McCaffrey's, a very popular Irish waterhing hole is right next door. This is the spot to be every year for the annual Irish Celebration on St. Patrick's Day!

Established in 1906, this cemetery is the oldest in Phoenix, which is still open. The mausoleums here are beautiful works of art inside and out.

I've always been intrigued by this cemetery, primarily by its size and age.

Seven different Arizona governors rest here along with Walter Winchell, a newspaper columnist credited with inventing the gossip column.

#6 - La Esperanza Market: A Glendale Landmark

63rd Ave. & Glendale, Glendale, AZ 85301

La Esperanza Market is small store located on the corner of 63rd Ave. and Glendale Ave. in Glendale, AZ. It is owned by Maria Arzate and family.
They sell ice cream and treats, and most of the students who have attended either Smith Elementary School or Glendale High School during the past 25 years have been her customers.

The store is an official landmark in the neighborhood and a kind of “safe house” for children coming from school.

In 2008, Arzate was formally honored by the City of Glendale of her 100th birthday and in appreciation for her commitment to the community.

#5 - Michael M. - A Real American to Honor

Meet Michael M. Mr. M was born and raised in Phoenix, AZ. It's not every day you meet a born and bred Phoenician who served his country, earning a Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Silver Star and Merit of Honor. I had the fortune of meeting Mr. M in Gordon Biersch in Glendale, AZ. Not only is he a hero, he has wonderful taste in beer. If you see this man, shake his hand.

#4 - Saint Mary's Basillica

231 North 3rd Street, Phoenix AZ

Originally built in 1881, Pope John Paul II visited the Diocese of Phoenix in 1987. It was a glorious day for Catholics and non-Catholics in all of Arizona and the Southwest. Honored as a minor basilica in 1885 by Rome, this Catholic church is the oldest in Phoenix. When visiting, please be respectful of this place of worship by maintaining appropriate behavior and attire.

These bikes parked outside of this joint are pretty. If you appreciate beer, the sexy curves of Choppers, Harleys and accountants in leather, this place rules. I like to call this one Green Monster.

#2-Pizzeria Bianco

623 E Adams St, Phoenix, AZ 85004-2334

I took this picture because veryone always asks..."Have you eaten at Pizzeria Bianco?" Any longtime resident should have by now. Lately though, the 2 hour line to get a table is now popular among the tourists visiting the downtown location.

Pizzeria Bianco was once voted the number one pizza in the entire US. Pretty nice, considering its location is in the middle of a southwestern desert and not NY or Chicago.

I personally think the pizza is pretty tasty. If you are taking in a baseball game or symphony hall, this is a great start or ending to that trip. Make sure you are patient and prepare for a long wait. There is a great little wine bar next door.

More importantly, you catch some other great spots neighboring this joint..such as Rose & Crown and Heritage Square.

Check out your downtown!

Scottsdale Road and the Carefree Highway

This photo was taken at the Cave Creek Cemetery located in Carefree, AZ. Located off of Scottsdale Road in Carefree. The memorial site was established in 1955 by the local association who wanted to preserve a piece of land for to celebrate and memorialize loved ones.

A cool aspect to this place, those who rest here are visited often by their loved ones who leave personal and interesting items graveside. I saw a pair of running shoes laying atop a runner's grave. Fishing poles, remote controls, knitting kits lay by those who once cherished such hobbies.

Next time you are visiting the Horny Toad for a beer, please stop in and check out a truly unique memorial site. Please be mindful and leave this beautiful place as you found it.
